STU in Bratislava

Institute of Engineering Studies of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava

The Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (hereinafter referred to as “STU”), the largest technical university in Slovakia, is a modern educational and research institution. The rich old tradition of its activity is linked-up to the Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica, established by Maria Theresa. The STU is providing a comprehensive and modern system of university education, research and cooperation with the world of work through the knowledge transfer. The STU disposes of the widest spectrum of the study branches. Since its establishment in 1937 more than 112 000 graduates have completed their education at the University, and the average number of students attending annually is 19 000. At present, the University consists of seven faculties and two institutes, offering the study within the accredited study programmes, in the complex system of Bachelor’s, Engineer’s (Master’s) and Doctoral degree courses. Credit system is compatible with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System in the light of the Bologna Declaration of the ministers of EU countries), enabling the bilateral student mobility in EU countries’ universities as well as within the framework of broader European and world-wide area.

The STU offers comprehensive education in a three-cycle credit system in the broad spectrum of technical branches, branches and programmes aimed at art and the humanities as well as in the teacher training concentrations. The research-based practical training is among the priorities too. The system of education is connected with the prestigious partner universities in the framework of international programmes (Lifelong Learning, Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci) using the modern methods of education, laboratories and practical training. It is aimed at the study branches with stable opportunities of students’ employment at the labour market. The STU offers education in foreign languages, primarily in the following areas: civil engineering and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and food technology, architecture.

International cooperation is a significant area based on interactive contact with educational as well as scientific-research institutions of the countries all over the world. First of all, it is focused on solution of the joint projects within the EU framework and other international programmes, mobility of students, teaching staff and researchers. The STU has an active contract collaboration with foreign countries (inter-governmental university and faculty framework agreements), linked-up to membership in international organizations, participation in international events abroad and their organization and realization at the STU.

Today, one of the main tasks of the STU is the active policy in the area of foreign students’ recruitment. The number of foreign students at individual STU faculties has been raised several times during the past six years; at the moment, almost 600 foreign students attend all the STU faculties. The STU creates for the students high-quality conditions for the study and for active use of free time. The University gives space for development of foreign students’ recruitment, especially those from the non-member EU countries.

With the intention to make effective use of the existing possibilities and to extend the university activities to foreign students, first of all from countries outside European Union, the Institute of Engineering Studies of the Slovak University of Technology (hereinafter referred to as the “IES”) with its seat in Bratislava, has been established in 2008, as a teaching and research workplace of the STU with the university-wide area of competency.

Among the main activities of the IES is unification of administration agenda related to foreign student admission and provision of the study process, development of co-operation between different faculties with university-wide interest. The IES integrates and co-ordinates the recruitment programme, the admission and keeping the foreign student agenda (first of all that of self-paying students, and those studying under the exchange bilateral or European programmes). It creates conditions for the publicity campaign for recruitment of students from abroad, for professional provision of the new study programmes within their area of competency and for integration of the STU capacities in the research activity in the areas of guaranteed study programmes.

The scientific and pedagogical profile of the IES consists especially of provision and guaranty of pedagogical and research activities in interdisciplinary areas of education and research, outreaching the frameworks of individual STU faculties. The IES guarantees professionalism in the new study programmes and integration of the STU capacities in education and study programmes which are of inter-sector and interdisciplinary character or, for some other reason, more efficient to be provided than the University study programmes.

The IES establishment has brought along new opportunity of broader inter-university mobility of students, teaching staff and research workers. The IES secures the new quality of service activities for the University and multi-functional study programmes. Integration of teaching performances for several study programmes carried out at the STU and its faculties, contributes to making the employment of the STU teaching capacities more efficient.

The IES accredits new study programmes made to order, based on the interest of and agreements with foreign partners, and carries out teaching activities in lifelong learning in foreign languages. The IES provides for administration of foreign student admission (according to Act No. 131/2002/Coll.) in its own study programmes based on the unified internal legislative framework and guidelines for foreign student education at the STU.

The IES offers for foreigners the accredited study programmes in selected study branches at individual STU faculties in English for the respective academic year, available on IES website. The IES priority objective is to attract ever increasing number of foreign applicants, benefiting from the offer of high-quality academic education at the STU in Bratislava.

In its activities the IES is also focused on preparation and submission of projects aimed at development of new study programmes within the framework of the following challenges: ESF Operational programme Education, Operational programme Education and Development, EU programme Education and Culture – Lifelong Learning, ERASMUS, Leonardo da Vinci, GRUNDTVIG, JEAN MONNET, Cultural and Educational Grant Agency at the Ministry of Education of the SR (KEGA), Scientific Grant Agency at the Ministry of Education of the SR and Slovak Academy of Sciences (VEGA), Slovak Grant Agency for Applied Research (GAAV), and others.
